South American rights for Aussie public-service broadcaster SBS

Australian public-service broadcaster SBS last week secured exclusive free-to-air rights to the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana competitions, reports SportBusiness.

The deal – which began with coverage of the Copa Libertadores quarter final between Colo-Colo and Palmeiras on Friday (September 21) in Australia – covers the remainder of the 2018 season.

SBS will broadcast a total of 10 Copa Libertadores matches and two Copa Sudamericana matches (the two-legged final) via its website, The World Game, and its app.

SBS struck the deal with Fox Networks Group, which holds Conmebol rights outside Latin America from 2016 to 2018. The coverage will complement SBS's other football content, which includes England's Premier League and the 2018 and 2022 Fifa World Cups.

Conmebol rights in the next four-year cycle, from 2019 to 2022, are being distributed globally by FC Diez Media, the joint venture between digital media company DAZN Group and the IMG agency.
