Souness concerned as Liverpool injury woes continue

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has expressed his concern at the mounting number of injuries at the club since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds lost Philippe Coutinho and Dejan Lovren to hamstring injuries in the League Cup semi-final victory over Stoke City on Tuesday night.

The Merseysiders were already without the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi, Martin Skrtel and Jordan Rossiter because of soft tissue problems.

Souness believes that Liverpool players are not able to cope with Klopp's training regime.

"Jurgen Klopp came in after 11 games and the players, certainly the players who were playing, would have had good fitness," Souness said on Sky Sports.

"All the talk was 'we're going to be energetic, we're going to be high press at every opportunity'. That demands real fitness.

"It's a difficult balance coming in after 11 games to push the players when they're playing two, maybe three games a week, weekend, midweek, weekend. I think it's a hard thing, a big ask to do that and not suffer the problems they've suffered."

Souness added: "The sports medicine people, they'll be tearing their hair out.

"They've got to manage that better because that can ruin your season. Hamstrings are not two or three days out, they can range from 10 days to six weeks so a hamstring is the one that players do not want."
