Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has always had in his mind a return to Manchester United.

Solskjaer has now revealed in an interview in his homeland that he had a clause in his contracts both at Cardiff and at Molde that would have allowed him to join United - should they have come calling.

Asked if he always thought he would manage United at one point in his career, he told NRK: "Yes!

"Call me naive, call me stupid, call me ambitious, call me whatever you want. But ever since I trained the reserves team (at United) the dream was to become the manager of Manchester United.

"I have to be my own man. But it so happens that Manchester United have a way of playing that suits me well.

"After Cardiff I had to be honest and say I didn't think this would happen.

"I had seen it as a potential diving board - do well in the Premier League and then Manchester United.

"But when it went as it did in Cardiff I thought 'it's over, I'm done'.

"I made sure to have a small, let's call it a clause, in my contracts, that said if Manchester United called, they would have to let me go."
