Socceroos injury scare as Cahill forced off for NYRB

Tim Cahill has sent an injury shudder through the Australian national team camp.

The 34-year old midfielder was forced off the pitch inside the opening half-hour as New York Red Bulls drew 1-1 with Chivas USA at Red Bull Arena on Sunday.

It is believed that Cahill has strained his hamstring, rather than torn it, but will have scans early this week to determine the extent of the problem.

Former Manchester City, Southampton and Charlton Athletic forward Bradley Wright-Phillips, who replaced Cahill, suggested that perhaps the damage suffered by the ex-Everton ace was not too serious.

"I spoke to Tim at half-time and he seemed OK," Wright-Phillips told AAP.

"He was smiling which is always a good sign but hopefully the scans on Monday will show no serious damage. It doesn't help us when our big players like Tim have to go off so early."

The Red Bulls needed an injury-time equalizer from Peguy Luyindula to cancel out Erick Torres' earlier penalty to take their 2014 record to three draws and one loss.
