Atletico Madrid midfielder Vitolo was quick to rescue Luis Suarez from making a major error on his debut on Sunday.
Suarez enjoyed a perfect start for Atletico on Sunday, scoring twice in their 6-1 rout of Granada.
However, it almost was wrecked when the Uruguay international appeared set to trod on the club's crest when returning to the home dressing room.
Spotting what was about to happen, Vitolo acted quickly to drag Suarez away before he stepped on the Atletico badge.
The tradition was first set in 2005 by the late Luis Aragones.
Spain was playing against Slovakia at the Vicente Calderón in a World Cup playoff. During one incident, the fourth official was ready to warn Aragones so that he did not leave his technical area. In his actions, he planted his foot on top of the shield that decorated the stadium turf. The coach's response was blunt: 'And you don't step on that shield'.
It's a tradition that has been carried out at Atlético de Madrid ever since.
Liked this little detail at full time yesterday: Vitolo trying to get to Suarez in time to tell him not to walk across the club badge. Suarez’s ooops, when he realizes. pic.twitter.com/cyMCuQjv7C — Sid Lowe (@sidlowe) September 28, 2020
