Aston Villa kept their slim survival hopes alive with a courageous 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.
Luck went the home side's way when Mamadou Sakho's early opener was ruled out for a handball.
Trezeguet then gave Villa the lead deep into first-half stoppage time when he side-footed the ball past Vicente Guaita.
Jack Grealish thought he had won a penalty after being tackled by Patrick van Aanholt, but VAR said there was no foul and overturned the decision.
It didn't matter however as Trezeguet popped up to grab his second with a scrappy toe-poke.
Compounding the loss for Palace was Christian Benteke's silly red-card after the whistle, awarded after he appeared to kick out at an opponent. He now faces a three-game suspension, leaving Roy Hodgson with one less forward for the remaining matches.
"We have found it hard this season and there is no getting away from that," said Smith after Villa's first win in 11 league games.
"I know these players can play under pressure. We have been playing tournament football since we came back.
"We haven't got the points we need but we're still in the tournament."
