Smith defends Newcastle selection: Did I gamble Leicester's future?

Leicester City boss Dean Smith has again defended his tactics for their 0-0 draw with Newcastle.

The result has left the Foxes needing Everton to lose on the final day for any chance to beat the drop.

Smith said: “Have I gambled with Leicester's future? No. I'm a bit of a risk-taker, but that wasn't a gamble. If I came here and went at Newcastle, we could have got beaten by four or five, such have been the goals we have given away.

“It was never a gamble. We kept a clean sheet which was what we needed to do. We just needed to score, which we usually don't have problems with.

“It wasn't going to be an easy game coming. I'm not sure many people expected us to get a result today.

“Ideally we were looking to keep them out until the last 15 or 20 minutes, and then maybe have a bit more of a go. Tiredness and a little bit too much pressure meant I had to change it earlier probably than I would have.

“It's really hard at this level to turn a switch and just say we're going to have a go at Newcastle now, with the quality they have and what they've shown this season."

Smith added, “We had to think about ourselves and the best way to go and get a result. There wouldn't been many people who saw a result for us. If it's too little too late, who knows. But we've taken it to Sunday."
