Smith concedes Leicester players 'anxious' after Newcastle draw

Leicester City boss Dean Smith concedes nerves dominated his players for Monday night's 0-0 draw at Newcastle.

The result keeps Leicester's hopes of Premier League survival alive for the final day of the season.

Smith said, "We wanted to keep the ball a bit better when we got it, maybe looking for the feet of our front two sometimes.

"Once we regained the ball we had to connect a few more passes before we went there [to the forwards].

"But I understand the players are anxious at the moment, they wanted to keep a clean sheet and we wanted to get to the final bit of the game where we could try and nick it."

On changing tactics as the match went on, he continued: "I was always fearful that if we kept Kelechi [Iheanacho] as a sub then brought him on he would break down because he had only just come back from injury.

"He gave us a really good 45 minutes and then we brought on James [Maddison] and we wanted to see if we could get the ball into him. We were hoping there might be a sprinkling of stardust that he can bring.

"Later on, the changes were to bring on the pace of Patson Daka and Harvey Barnes and give them a problem. I thought second half we restricted them better than we managed to in the first half."

On the final day, Smith added: "We're going to need help. I think there's going to be a lot of anxiety between the three teams that are in it.

"First and foremost we have a really tough job against West Ham, to try and win that game. But I'm sure with our supporters behind us [we can do that], they saw how hard the players worked today.

"And then it is out of our hands. If Everton win... we obviously will give it our best shot and as long as we can say that we have fought tooth and nail, all we can do is put pressure on them."
