Short wants Sunderland boss Bruce to reduce wage bill

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is facing more wage issues this summer.

The Sunday Sun says Black Cats owner Ellis Short wants Steve Bruce to cut the club's wage bill this summer.

The Black Cats' spending on wages spiralled under previous boss Roy Keane, as his under-performing squad swelled to more than 40 players at one stage.

When Bruce took over in the summer he signalled a change in direction and set about whittling his squad to a more manageable 23 or 24 players.

To that end, he offloaded 18 players and brought in seven - but as he sought to bring in quality signings such as Darren Bent and Lee Cattermole, the annual wage bill went UP by around £12m.

Short has told chairman Niall Quinn that he wants to reduce the wage bill.
