Shorey happy he stayed and fought for Villa spot

Aston Villa fullback Nicky Shorey is happy he stuck it out this season.

The England international is back in the plans of manager Martin O'Neill and said: "I don't think you can ever stand still. You always want to improve and that's the main thing when you're in football, especially at a club like Villa.

"The demand on you to play at the top of your game, week in, week out, is very high.

"Maybe it wasn't so much at my previous club, but that's the way it goes at a big club. They expect you to be playing at the top level every game.

"It's just the way the club is. It's such a big club, you feel it as soon as you come here. They just try to push you to improve and that's fine by me.

"You've just got to work hard on the things you're not so good at and then hopefully you'll be able to stick around at a club like this."
