Sherwood: Liverpool boss Klopp chose Fabinho over De Jong

Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood believes Jurgen Klopp rejected the chance to sign Frenkie de Jong for Liverpool.

De Jong signed for Barcelona in January from Ajax, eventually making the move last summer.

Sherwood, however, revealed: "I know that a number of players have been offered to Klopp.

"Like Frenkie de Jong, the boy from Ajax, who ended up at Barcelona. He is more of a controlling, refined player.

"But then you also have a Fabinho, who really likes to go at that fast pace and moves more around the field. Then Klopp has made his choice.

"It is easy to scout for Klopp, because you know exactly how he wants to play. He wants hard-working midfielders who keep it simple, move forward and can keep up with the fast pace, as Fabinho does. He is very important.

"Whether De Jong can participate in this team from Manchester City? Yes. But he cannot do what Fabinho does. De Jong would play as number six, just before the defence. He would play the game and dictate the pace. And he is brilliant in that. But he would not be able to put so much energy into a match. Fabinho is a better option."
