The 21-year-old joined the Blades on loan last month and boss Gary Speed is keen to keep him.
De Laet has started five games for Manchester United but is still a fringe player despite earning two caps for Belgium.
And Speed wants to capitalise on that by offering him the chance to build a career at Bramall Lane.
He said: "It is certainly something we shall have a look at.
"I had seen him three of four times in Manchester United's reserves and he was their best player.
"I think the two games he has played for us he has been excellent as well."
