Sheffield Utd finally win first game of season over dreadful Newcastle

Sheffield United finally won their first game of the season with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United on Tuesday.

The Blades were given a significant advantage when Ryan Fraser was shown two yellow cards in the space of three minutes right before half-time.

Newcastle looked lethargic throughout the contest and were ultimately punished by their opponents, albeit through another VAR incident.

With little over 15 minutes remaining, Chris Wilder's side were awarded a penalty after the referee checked the monitor to decide that Federico Fernandez handled the box during a tussle with Billy Sharp.

Sharp, a local Sheffield lad, stepped up to convert from the spot, making it his 100th league goal for his boyhood club.

The result gives the Blades a glimmer of hope in what would be the most miraculous relegation comebacks.

The Bramall Lane outfit now have five points on the season and are nine points from safety.

For the Toon faithful, it was a performance which only served to frustrate as their side has now just one goal in their last 10 hours of play.

Sitting just eight points above 18th-placed Fulham, who have two games in hand, Bruce's side will find themselves in a relegation battle if they continue the performances of Tuesday night.

Speaking after the game, Wilder joked that he would have quit the sport if his side had copped an equaliser in injury time.

"I should imagine the sending-off and the penalty will be talked about but in my opinion we were value for the victory," Wilder told reporters.

"Everybody needs a bit of luck. But it wasn't an outrageous stroke of fortune. The performance was good, considering the position we are in.

"We've had a load of tight games and we'll take it. I was looking for my car keys and to take up another sport if we'd thrown it away in added time."
