Shearer: Sacked Aston Villa boss Gerrard has missed Beale

Former England captain Alan Shearer says the sacking of Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard was "inevitable".

Gerrard's luck as Villa boss finally ran out on Thursday evening after a 3-0 defeat at Fulham, less than a year after he took over at the Midlands club having left Rangers in November 2021.

"It's a results driven business, you know that. Every manager that goes into a football club knows," said Shearer.

"You don't get time at this level. You have to get results and from where they were when he took over to where they are now… he'll be bitterly disappointed that he hasn't been able to improve them. The inevitable happens unfortunately.

"I also don't think it helped losing his top coach [Michael Beale, now in charge of QPR]. He was obviously an integral part of what was going on at AV, for him to lose that as well on top of everything else going on…"
