Shearer must drop great friend Owen to save Newcastle season

Alan Shearer faces a massive decision over axing Newcastle United captain Michael Owen.

The Sun says with five games to save Newcastle from the drop, the Toon boss may have to forget his friendship and follow Joe Kinnear and Chris Hughton this season by dumping Owen on the bench.

It is an agonising call for Shearer - but the brutal reality is Owen, 29, no longer delivers the goals Newcastle need.

At Spurs on Sunday, he cut a forlorn figure, barely recognisable from the instinctive striker who used to score for fun.

Granted, he received little or no service. But at no stage did Owen look a threat and he continually dropped far too deep.
