Shearer: England and Hodgson will be judged after Euro2016

England great Alan Shearer claims that the current national squad and manager Roy Hodgson stand to be judged at the completion of Euro2016.

Shearer believes that following the disappointment of the 2014 World Cup, nothing less than a semi-final appearance in France will be considered a good tournament for Hodgson and his team.

The Three Lions, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United legend said: "Managers are defined by their success and certainly the last World Cup was bitterly disappointing.

"England need to have a good tournament this time, and I don't think Roy Hodgson would tell you any different.

"After Leicester won the title, we know anything is possible in football now, but with a bit of energy, excitement and fresh belief generated by young players, what is a good tournament this time - maybe the semi-finals?

"A great tournament would be getting to the final and winning it, but realistically I don't think we'll do that because my big worry is our defence, certainly straight down the middle anyway.

"I can see that being a big issue for us as it has been in the last couple of tournaments.

"People always criticise and say we're sick of building, we're sick of waiting, but hopefully we will at least see some improvement from the youngsters who have had a magnificent season with their clubs.

"We skated through our qualifying group with ease, as we should have done, because there were no real tests in there. But Roy knows you get judged in tournaments – you don't have to tell him that."
