Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer is backing a fan buy-out of the club from owner Mike Ashley.

The club's supporters have been unhappy with Ashley's ownership for many years, given the club's lack of spending on transfers and wages, and their poor finishes in the Premier League.

The Newcastle United Supporters' Trust, which consists of 15,000 fans, is asking supporters to pay cash into a special fund that will be used to buy a stake in the club if Ashley ever sells.

The group aims to raise up to £3 million, and Shearer tweeted about the news, saying: "Well done, I'm in."

If the bid is unsuccessful, fans would not get their money back, as those funds would be donated to a charity in the North East.
