Sevilla chief Monchi insists new coach Jose Luis Mendilibar was a top choice.

The veteran has been hired to the end of the season after the sacking of Jorge Sampaoli.

Monchi said, “There were other possibilities and I don't agree that nobody wanted to come for three months. There were more options, but based on the problems we believe this is the most suitable solution.

"Everyone has their own opinion on any issue, it has been debated and discussed internally. It is democratic and it is right that there is a confrontation, but a common point must be reached, a decision defended by all.

"No one hoped more than me that Sampaoli would get us out of this situation and hope that José Luis will do it now. This club has always grown through tackling, but with respect."
