Former Real Betis coach Quique Setien is in the frame for a return to Barcelona.
The 61 year-old is on the board's shortlist, along with Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, to replace Ernesto Valverde.
Barca's priority has been Al Sadd coach Xavi, but he is reluctant to leave his Qatari club before the end of their season.
Pochettino is now favoured by the club's heirarchy, where he is close to president Jose Maria Bartomeu and director Ramon Planes. However, Setien also has his supporters inside the boardroom thanks to the way Betis played when he was in charge.
Another name on the radar is former Barca defender Gaby Milito, reports Mundo Deportivo, who is currently in charge of Estudiantes.
