Seattle Sounders coach Schmid supports roster expansion

Seattle Sounders coach Sigi Schmid supports talk of roster expansion.

Schmid says it's the right way to go with commitments of clubs now being stretched.

He told the Seattle Times: "Yeah I think that's going to be natural transition. I think the expanded rosters and being able to go back to a reserve league I think is beneficial for the league because as the academy kids now step up to the next level you need a place for them to play if they're not ready to play on your first team. So having a reserve league is important.

"What often gets overlooked in our league, is there are a lot of guys who are starting in this league now -- Alejandro Moreno as an example, Larentowicz at Colorado is another example, Brandon McDonald at San Jose is another example -- that without a reserve league, without there having been developmental players, those guys all started out as developmental players and have all become very solid players in this league.

"I think having that developmental league again is going to be important because we're going to find some gems at the end of the day."
