The second round of the 2011/12 Scottish Communities League Cup is now complete after four matches were played last night.
Premier League clubs Motherwell and St Johnstone eased into the third round with comfortable victories over lower opposition whilst Ayr United upset Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
Motherwell were away at third division Clyde and got the job done with a 4-0 win thanks to first-half goals from Michael Higdon and Nicky Law before Tom Hateley and Steven Lawless added two more to send Stuart McCall's men into the next stage.
In Perth, St Johnstone backed up their surprise league win over Celtic with a 3-0 result against last season's second division champions Livingston with the opening goal being provided by Frazer Wright before Francisco Sandaza grabbed a double inside the opening 25 minutes.
Falkirk came from behind to beat Stenhousemuir 3-1 at home whilst first division Ayr United scored through Eddie Malone in the 60th minute to knock out top flight Inverness 1-0.
The third round, which sees the top five teams from last season - Rangers, Celtic, Heart of Midlothian, Dundee United and Kilmarnock - joining the 11 second round winners will be drawn on Monday, August 29.
