Schwarzer notches up longest goalless spell

When Australia defeated Uzbekistan 2-0 on Wednesday night, Mark Schwarzer notched up another record.

This time it was for the longest spell without conceding a goal for a Socceroos goalkeeper.

Schwarzer (with help from the Socceroos defence) has gone 529 minutes without conceding a goal and although he was unaware of the feat, was pleasantly surprised.

"A lot of what's happened is down to the defence, which has been excellent through the qualification series," he said.

"I genuinely wasn't aware until I was told about these milestones and while it's pleasing it's not something that really motivates me.

"Against Uzbekistan I really had nothing to do until the last few minutes and that's the way you like it as a keeper," he added.

"But it's also good to play your part when the pressure is on. That's the job and it's obviously something you want to excel at."
