Schalke 04 director Horst Heldt has revealed that winger Leroy Sane was the subject of interest from Liverpool this summer, but was never really interested in a move to Anfield.

The 19-year-old recently signed a contract extension with Schalke, keeping him at the Bundesliga club until 2019.

Heldt said the Reds had made a serious effort to finalise a deal for Sane, but a move to Merseyside was never a realistic proposition.

"There was one or more prestigious club that contacted us about Sane," Heldt told German publication SportsBild.

"Liverpool was ready to pay money for him.

"These offers didn't at all interest us or the player. I am really not concerned about losing the player.

"Two years ago, Ajax made an offer as well."
