Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero admits he turned down the chance to sign Genoa striker Krzysztof Piatek.

The two teams face-off this weekend.

“The incredible thing is that Piatek was the understudy to Kownacki," Ferrero told Radio Marte.

“We saw both of them in action and decided to sign Kownacki, because he was the first choice. I hope that Piatek can keep his form up for a long time, so I'll finally see (Genoa President Enrico) Preziosi smile.

“I hope the Derby can bring a smile to the faces of all the citizens of Genoa."
