Southampton are meeting the buyout clause of Real Valladolid defender Mohammed Salisu.
The young Ghanaian has agreed to move to St Mary's despite a rival offer from Rennes, which will compete in next season's Champions League.
Saints have now moved to meet the €12m buyout clause in Salisu's contract to take him to the south coast.
Salisu was in Valladolid on Saturday, but has already undergone a medical examination and will sign a four-year contract.
Saints could announce the deal before the end of the day.
