Salah proud as Liverpool are European champions: I'm from an Egyptian village!

Liverpool are European champions after managing to control their Champions League final against Tottenham.

It was Mohamed Salah, such a disconsolate figure when he was injured early in that loss to Real Madrid, who set Liverpool on their way with a penalty after two minutes when Moussa Sissoko was contentiously punished for handball.

In a final that rarely touched the heights of the blockbuster semi-finals that made this an all-Premier League showpiece, Spurs had chances but were denied by Liverpool keeper Alisson, who saved well from Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Christian Eriksen.

And their failure to capitalise was ruthlessly punished when substitute Divock Origi ensured manager Jurgen Klopp won his first trophy as Liverpool manager by driving low and powerfully past Hugo Lloris with three minutes left.

At the final whistle, Salah said: "Everyone is happy now, I am glad to play the second final in a row and play 90 minutes finally. Everyone did his best today, no great individual performances today, all the team was unbelievable.

"We will see VAR next season, but I like it now!

"I have sacrificed a lot for my career, to come from a village to go to Cairo, and to be an Egyptian at this level is unbelievable for me."

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold added: "It is hard to put into words. The season we have had, we deserved it more than any other team. We have done something special, we dominated the game.

"We will not look back and think it was sluggish game, we will see we are European champions.

"I am just a normal lad from Liverpool whose dream has just come true."
