Athletic Bilbao have sacked coach Eduardo Berizzo.

Berizzo was axed on Tuesday morning, following the Bilbao-based team's 3-0 loss at the hands of Levante on Monday night.

Los Leones remain in the bottom three, with 11 points from 14 games, and face a battle as they aim to maintain their status as one of three teams to never have been relegated from the Spanish top flight.

Berizzo even said after the Monday night defeat that he might consider resigning if it would help the team, but he has been let go before having to make such a decision.

Gaizka Garitano, who has previously coached Eibar in LaLiga Santander and who has been in charge of the B team, will take over first-team duties for the time being.
