RSL keeper Rimando lands MLS Player of the Week award

Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando has been named the MLS Player of the Week for Week 1 of the 2014 season.

The 34-year old starred at the back for the Claret and Cobalt, making nine saves in their 1-0 victory over LA Galaxy at the StubHub Center.

Rimando's highlights from the shutout included a diving save to deny Robbie Keane with his left hand in the 12th minute before producing a reaction effort to keep out Landon Donovan from close range in the 38th minute.

The RSL custodian kept his side in the contest when tipping wide Stefan Ishizaki's long range attempt in the 76th minute before Joao Plata scored the only goal of the contest in the 80th minute, allowing the visitors to take the lead.

Then in injury-time, the Galaxy were awarded a penalty when Rob Friend appeared to be pushed in the area only for Rimando to choose the right way and thwart Galaxy captain Keane with a diving save to his right.

Rimando's match-winning performance was enough to land him the Week 1 award from a panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).
