Former Everton chief Joe Royle believes Wayne Rooney wanted one more season at Goodison Park.

Rooney's move to DC United was just confirmed last week.

Royle told the Daily Star: “There's a new boss, a new regime and they have their own ideas for the future of Everton.

“They have young talent so the new management team have made a quick decision and allowed him to go.

“Wayne came back to Everton for a little bit of a swansong and it possibly lasted a season less than he would have liked.

“But that's football."
