Rothen defends Benzema over taunting Chelsea striker Giroud: Not demeaning

Former PSG star Jerome Rothen has jumped to the defence of Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

Benzema has taken some heat over comments made about Chelsea centre-forward Olivier Giroud.

While praising Giroud's role in France's World Cup triumph in 2018, Benzema was disparaging of the veteran when asked to compare themselves. The Real ace said it would be like comparing "a F1 with a go-kart".

And Rothen insisted on RMC: "It doesn't shock me at all because he simply told the truth.

"Everyone thinks and knows that there are three classes of difference between Giroud and Benzema. And that is not to demean Giroud. Even Karim says in the interview: Giroud has a fantastic career, he won titles. If you tell me about the intrinsic qualities between Giroud and Benzema, they are three worlds apart.

"Does it shock him to say it? I think he would have had a little more respect for the way of expressing himself if there had been a real bond between Giroud and Benzema. This is not the case. I will not talk about what I do not know but there was not a crazy agreement between the two.

"He did not insult him and even said that he won titles and congratulations to him. He puts him forward, he doesn't put him down."
