Danny Blind's black era as manager of the Dutch national team came to end on Sunday with his resignation after Hollands atrocious 2-0 defeat in Sofia against Bulgaria in World Cup qualifying.
The once-proud football nation - who finished second and third at the past two World Cups - is now drowning because of total mismanagement, numerous bad decisions and a lack of pure quality players.
The KNVB has manoeuvred itself in the plight to appoint a new coach for the third time since Louis Van Gaal departed in July 2014.
But who is able to stop the Dutch from completely submerging?
It seems ages, but the summer of 2014 is only about 2.5 years in the past. At the World Cup in Brazil, the Oranje were absolutely on fire.
The expectations ahead were not too high, but Van Gaal succeeded to create a masterpiece of his available selection.
A hardworking team with heart, spirit and an excelling Arjen Robben. A tournament that made the Oranje army proud with the historical revenge win against Spain (5-1) in the opening match, before finishing third after a 3-0 win against home side Brazil.
But the pride has turned into shame after missing out on the European Championships in France, while Russia 2018 is far out of sight.
The names of Ronald Koeman, Frank De Boer, Feyenoord's Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, PSV's Philip Cocu and van Gaal top the list to succeed Blind. In 2014, Koeman openly applied for the job but the KNVB incomprehensibly chose a construction with Guus Hiddink as head coach and Blind as his assistant.
With both Hiddink and Blind failing, the door is again open for Koeman, but the Everton manager already stated not to be interested. He is waiting for Barcelona.
It is one of the major misjudgments from former KNVB boss Bert van Oostveen, who left the association in absolute chaos.
Career-wise it's likely not the best moment for contemporaries such as De Boer, Van Bronckhorst or Cocu to lead the Dutch. De Boer was the most obvious successor of Blind, but the fired Inter Milan coach also declared not to be interested.
After the debacle in Sofia, the Dutch are running fourth in Group A of the European qualification for Russia 2018.
Direct qualification seems impossible as France tops the group with a six-point lead. Holland has five games left to overtake Sweden and Bulgaria to claim second place. With four wins out of five they can still hope for the play-offs.
But there is a lack of quality Dutch players in the age bracket of 24-30, and the current morality that the mission will fail rather than succeed. De Boer, Van Bronckhorst and Cocu will have the ambition to one day coach their country, but not at this moment.
Blind's coaching ability in the last 1.5 years has been so poor, with almost all his decisions going terribly wrong. He failed to motivate his players and could not create a team to achieve, with plenty of shortcomings.
His incomprehensible and irresponsible choice to start against Bulgaria with 17-year old Matthijs de Ligt in the heart of the defence sealed his fate.
Bad defending from the talented youngster (who has only played 7 games for Ajax) preceded the two Bulgarian goals. He never should have started.
An historical gaffe from Blind's staff that not only caused Holland's loss, it also ruined the confidence of a talented teenager.
A mistake which van Gaal would never have made.
All is said with Dutch legends Koeman, De Boer and Van Bronckhorst declining the job.
It's also uncertain if former Manchester United manager Van Gaal is interested in a third period as manager of his country. Louis is at the end of his coaching career but he has arrogance, technical insight, enforcing power to motivate players and an ability to forge a quality team.
This is exactly what his country needs.
With his technical ability, Louis can make the Dutch great again.
