Wayne Rooney's debut season in MLS has ended in heartbreak as DC United were knocked out of the playoffs after penalty shootout loss to Columbus Crew.

With the scores tied at 2-2 after 120 minutes of play, spot-kicks were used to decide who would advance to the second round of the playoffs.

The former Manchester United and Everton star missed DC's opening penalty before Luciano Acosta and Nick DeLeon also failed to convert.

It was a sad end for Rooney given his massive influence on the club since arriving in June.
