Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman has claimed that he was never close to joining Manchester United

Reports have linked Strootman with a move to Old Trafford in the past.

The Dutch international joined Roma from PSV Eindhoven in 2013 for a fee of around €13 million.

At the time during which his transfer was completed, he was also linked with a move to the Premier League with United.

Strootman has since opened up on the reports which linked him with a move to the Red Devils.

"I never talked with anybody," Strootman told The Independent. "No, no. There was a lot of speculation but to be honest I only spoke with Roma.

"There were some clubs who showed interest but it's always like that. They always say they are interested but at the end they don't do anything so it's nothing and I'm really happy that I chose Rome."
