Roma are chasing Newcastle United striker Michael Owen.

The Evening Chronicle says Owen's still impressive goalscoring record, allied with his availability on a free transfer from the end of this month, has lifted him towards the top of their list of targets.

Everton have a long-term interest in Owen, and the striker would be willing to take a massive cut in his current £100,000-plus weekly salary to join the club he supported as a kid.

It also remains to be seen whether Liverpool's worsening financial situation compels them to make a freebie move for their celebrated old boy.
