Rodgers: Liverpool to overcome Champions League failure with big Europa League run

Brendan Rodgers says Liverpool are gunning for the Europa League title this season after disappointing in the Champions League.

The Anfield club fell short upon their return to Europe's premier club competition, finishing third behind Real Madrid and FC Basel in the group stage, which has forced them into the Europa League's Round of 32.

On Thursday night, the Reds host Turkish league leaders Besiktas in the first leg and Rodgers insists the goal is to get past the Istanbul giants before setting their sights on something bigger.

"We had put in two years of hard work to get to the Champions League and when we arrived there we didn't have the team to have that way of working," said Rodgers of the Group B failure.

"That was the frustration. It was not that level earlier on. I was always hopeful we could still be in the Champions League at this stage and show our way of working.

"We hope we can be in the Champions League for a number of years and be a lot more consistent and stable with our performances.

"It was not to be this season, but the Europa League is still a very good competition and we will attack these games in this competition like we have in the last few months.

"We want to win it.

"It is a very prestigious tournament. You have seen teams under Gerard Houllier win the Uefa Cup and for me this is the Uefa Cup."
