Ricardo Gomes backing Benfica move for Arsenal defender David Luiz

Benfica hero Ricardo Gomes is supportive of their move for Arsenal defender David Luiz.

Luiz is in talks about re-signing for Benfica this summer. Indeed, the Brazil international has confirmed discussions with Benfica president Luiz Felipe Vieira about the prospect of returning.

Developments have accelerated in the past week with it emerging that Luiz had signed only a 12 month deal when arriving last summer from Chelsea. And with it due to expire at the end of this month, Luiz is now actively weighing up a move to Benfica.

It was Benfica which first brought Luiz to Europe from Vitoria in 2007. The defender stayed with the Portuguese giants for four years before joining Chelsea.

Former Bordeaux coach Gomes, who played for Benfica during two spells, is backing the deal - though questions how it will be funded. Gomes also questions whether it isn't overkill, given the talent at the back Benfica currently boast.

He told O Jogo: "David had a great time at Benfica and is a great player. It is a good request, but nowadays, the numbers are different and I do not know if Benfica would cover his salary.

"He is much more experienced, he has gained a load of important experience.

"Benfica has a great defence and centrals trained at home who have a good relationship. David can be a good complement to that youth, depending always on the choice of the coach, who is very good."
