Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has used a third party social media post to explain why he's endured some inconsistency this season.

Recent stories in the press have reported criticism of Greenwood's approach in training sessions, calling into question his dedication and professionalism.

United have been keen to ease the pressure on the young forward following his breakthrough into senior men's football and now the teenage sensation has 'liked' a post explaining the wider context of his situation.

"'Greenwood looks tired' 'Greenwood isn't trying hard enough' 'Greenwood needs to fix up' Mason Greenwood just lost a close friend to suicide and has been endlessly attacked and abused by football fans and the media for months now, leave the kid alone."

United legend Gary Neville shared the post on his Twitter account in defence of the youngster and he wasn't the only club icon to defend him, reports the Manchester Evening News.
