REVEALED: Man Utd working through 8-man shortlist of centre-half options

Manchester United chiefs are working through an eight man shopping list as they seek a new centre-half signing.

The Manchester Evening News says while Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld remains an option, the 29-year-old is not thought to be a preferred name on the shortlist.

United boss Jose Mourinho is considering alternatives to the Belgian as he looks to sign a new defender for the third summer in a row.

It is understood that scouts have expressed concerns about Alderweireld's 'profile' and he is not a '100% target' this summer.

A number of defenders are understood to be on United's radar, including Raphael Varane (Real Madrid), Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich), Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli), Milan Skriniar (Inter Milan), Alessio Romagnoli (AC Milan), Jose Gimenez (Atletico Madrid) and Caglar Soyuncu (Freiburg), but any prospective deal is expected to be the club's most complicated transfer this summer.

United currently have five centre-backs on their books - Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo - but want to sign another for the third summer in a row.
