REVEALED: Man Utd pair Lukaku, Matic backed Mourinho to the end

Manchester United chief Ed Woodward spoke to several players before sacking Jose Mourinho, it has been revealed.

The Mirror says the United executive vice-chairman spoke to the players on Monday to gauge the feeling in the dressing room after the defeat to Liverpool.

It is understood the majority felt United were not progressing under Mourinho and the board decided to act. Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku are believed to have pledged their allegiance to the manager.

The futures of a number of United players were up in the air under the Portuguese manager.

Paul Pogba seemed destined for the exit after being dropped to the bench by Mourinho while Anthony Martial and David De Gea are also believed to have wanted out.

And there were also concerns over the future of Marcus Rashford, with sources suggesting he could have been tempted away if the slide continued.
