Manchester United offered the manager's job to Laurent Blanc before appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker.
The Manchester Evening News says Blanc, however, blew his chances of taking over at United.
And that was because he wanted the position on a permanent basis instead - rather than the interim role the club were advertising.
Blanc has been out of work since leaving PSG back in 2016.
However, a United return now looks unlikely with Solskjaer coaxing the best from his side.
Many now want the 45-year-old to stay beyond the end of the current campaign.
