Manchester United flop Memphis Depay employed stats experts SciSports to help him choose Lyon in January.

The Daily Star says Depay completed a £16m move to French side Lyon and it has now been revealed how he came to that decision.

The 23-year-old employed stats group SciSports to work out which team would suit him best to help 'avoid a Royston Drenthe-scenario'.

VI claim the advice given to Depay's management team helped him to dismiss Everton, Fenerbahce and several Italian and Spanish teams.

SciSports founder Giels Brouwer told Dutch outlet AD. "His management asked us to advise him on a next step.

"We then performed a playing style analysis and looked at the competition at several clubs.

"We combined that with the things Memphis himself found important.

"Memphis was really open to our data and analysis. He was constantly focused on the question: how and where can I get better?"
