Reims striker Hugo Ekitike says he has a lot of respect for Newcastle United - but doesn't regret turning down a move in January.
Newcastle pushed hard for Ekitike during the winter market and are expected to try again this summer.
He told L'Equipe: “I respect this great club (Newcastle) a lot. But it happened quickly, it was not the timing.
"It was better to stay here, to do a full season, to confirm. These rumours make me smile, because it gratifies my work. I feel like I exist. I know that what I do on the ground is good, it is recognised. And not by anyone.
"It pushes me to give the best of myself. I always want to progress and be the best."
Ekitike, 20, also said: “I consider myself ready for anything. Whether it's staying here or taking on a challenge that everyone agrees on. I imagine an eventful summer! I think people will show interest in me. For my part, I will be quiet because I am surrounded by the right people to manage this."
