Ref Marriner 'devastated' over Arsenal howler

Ref Andre Marriner is "devastated" over his wrongful dismissal of Arsenal fullback Kieran Gibbs on Saturday at Chelsea.

Marriner made the biggest refereeing blunder of recent times when he sent off Gibbs after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain handled the ball in the Arsenal area.

The Daily Mail says Marriner's closest friends say he has been deeply affected by the incident during the 6-0 away loss to Chelsea and is still struggling to come to terms with how he could have made such a mistake.

Meanwhile, the Gibbs appeal is a formality and he will be cleared. Oxlade-Chamberlain will then inherit the red card and one-match ban, but Arsenal will appeal as it was not a clear denial of a scoring opportunity because the shot was not on target.
