Redknapp: Emery wrong to have Arsenal players choose captain

Harry Redknapp has slammed Unai Emery for allowing his 'poor group' of Arsenal players to decide their own captain.

The players voted for Granit Xhaka, who was recently stripped of the responsibility after clashing with his own supporters.

Speaking at a Daily Mail event, Former Spurs and West Ham boss Redknapp said: "Isn't it a poor group of players, you look at that team, it's so poor. There's a lack of heart.

"The manager keeps coming out, asking the players who should be the captain. You're the manager. You pick the captain, you go, "I like you, you're going to be my man, any problems and they can go to you", you don't let the players pick. What is this a popularity contest?"

Redknapp added that Arsene Wenger had failed to replace their defence from the early 2000's.

He added: “They need to sign some good players, Arsene Wenger signed some good players but he also walked into a club with an incredible back four and a goalkeeper, and Dennis Bergkamp was already there.

“And then suddenly them players go, it's how you replace them and they've never been able to replace them.

“I've got to be honest, I don't think Emery can turn things around. What amazes me, every time a top managerial job comes up, you have to go to someone big, what about the kid at Sheffield United, [Chris] Wilder, what about Eddie Howe. These kind of people.

“You haven't got to be a genius to look at Arsenal and go hang on, they need a couple of central defenders and they need a midfielder player, but they keep buying forwards."
