REALLY GLENN? Hoddle says current England played better than Italia 90 heroes

Chelsea and Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle insists it's not all doom-and-gloom for England. Hoddle wrote in the London Evening Standard: "We've got the players we've got and we have to deal with that. Changing the manager would take us backwards.

"This has not been as disastrous a tournament as people are making out. There have been fractions in it - Wayne Rooney's header against the bar, a penalty we should have been awarded against Italy - and we were not stretched nor torn apart. Joe Hart hardly had a save to make in two games apart from a couple of Luis Suarez corners and in both games we might have come out on top.

"In 1990, England's performances in the group games were far worse than Roy and the team have served up here. Back then England couldn't create a thing, relied on a Mark Wright header against Egypt to get us through, and we ended up in the semi-finals of a World Cup. Yet we played better here in the group games. England were awful, plain awful, in the group games at Italia 90. That shows you what tournament football is like."
