Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino has welcomed the arrival of new teammate David Silva.

Silva has joined La Real on a free transfer from Manchester City, turning down Lazio in the process.

"David is a special signing that nobody expected," said Merino.

"With the departure of (Martin) Odegaard, we needed someone in that position and there is no one better than Silva."

Merino has just been named by Luis Enrique in the Spain squad for the Nations League qualifiers.

He added: "When I received the news it was a spectacular moment and being able to have my first call is something very special and I will try to make the most of it."
