Real Madrid see off Man City to finally land Portsmouth's Diarra

Real Madrid have seen off competition from Manchester City to sign Portsmouth midfielder Lassana Diarra.

Pompey agreed a deal with the Spanish giants earlier this week, with the fee reported to be in the region of £20million, and the French international will undergo a medical in Madrid on Monday.

Diarra is expected to sign a four-and-a-half-year contract if there are no problems with the medical.

Despite Madrid having had their offer for Diarra accepted last Wednesday, under-fire City boss Mark Hughes admitted he was still interested in hijacking the move and taking him to the mega-rich club.

But the former Chelsea and Arsenal man has opted to instead join the current La Liga champions.

Diarra is likely to earn an immediate starting spot at the Bernabeu with fellow defensive midfielders Mahamadou Diarra and Ruben de la Red both ruled out for the season.

The combative midfielder will work under new Madrid coach Juande Ramos, who is in charge until the end of the season following the sacking of Bernd Schuster earlier this month.
