Manchester United have identified Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane as a long-term transfer target, according to reports.

The Sunday Times is reporting United boss Louis van Gaal is a fan of Varane's and may look to make a move for the 22-year-old Frenchman next summer.

Relations between the Red Devils and Los Blancos are believed to be strained following the David de Gea transfer saga this summer, but it is understood United are hopeful a future deal for France international Varane could still be worked out.

Chelsea are also believed to be interested in Varane, who played under Jose Mourinho during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu.
