Real Madrid defender Varane on Man City 'mistakes': They cost us victory

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has revisited his disastrous performance against Manchester City for last season's Champions League round 16 elimination.

Defeat in Manchester, where Varane was culpable for the 2-1 reverse, saw Real bundled out of the competition.

"Right after the game I wanted to accept the mistakes I made and that cost us victory," Varane told Bein Sport. "You had to digest it, but then you have to get over it and look ahead. This is elite football."

Varane also spoke of Sergio Ramos: “We are complementary in the way we play, we have qualities that blend well. We have been playing together for years, we know each other very well. I talk to my teammates about the tactics, the position on the field. I am also a leader in my own way."

Finally, the Frenchman referred to coach Zinedine Zidane.

“He expects me to take more risks, to push the team, to push higher and to defend in advance. Do not hesitate when attacking rival lines with the ball vertically, to be another resource for the team. That pushes me to get out of my comfort zone a bit and it's something that I like."
