Reading boss Steve Coppell admits he's desperate to see England left-back Nicky Shorey sign a new contract.

He said: "It can be a dangerous game trying to commit to players. Just as much as they want to commit to you, they also see the opportunity to win things at other clubs.

"It's a delicate balancing act for him but he knows we are desperate for him to stay with us.

"I'd love to see him sign for us. He's still got a couple of years left on his contract, but we just want to reward him for what he's done and make sure he doesn't get envious eyes and start looking elsewhere.

"I hope he signs, he's on the crest of his confidence wave at the moment, I think the England set-up in the summer has pushed him on again.

"He was, arguably, one of our most effective players throughout all of last season."
